Victory Day as a symbol of the memory of generations

Victory Day as a symbol of generational memory
    artist adel_gluck
Victory Day (May 9) is a holiday in honor of the day when the USSR and the allied countries defeated Nazi Germany. In fact, the German Surrender Act was signed on the evening of May 8th, and entered into force on the night of the 9th. Interestingly, despite the signing of the act of surrender, the peace treaty between Russia and Germany was signed only in the fifties of the last century.
Celebrations are taking place all over the country on this day. Most often, this day is not a working day in government institutions, but also just a warm spring day, so many people get out of their homes to participate in mass celebrations, old people and their grandchildren carry flowers to Victory monuments. There are various programs on television about people's lives at that time, about their memories, which form into whole cycles of stories about Victory, how people went to it. The most popular topics for broadcasts, apart from biographies of front–line soldiers and home front workers, are the besieged Leningrad, the crossing of the Dnieper, and the Battle of Stalingrad. Educational institutions also do not forget about the exploits of their ancestors, holding meetings with veterans, staging battles, staging performances based on the works of the war years, of which many were written.
City events dedicated to Victory Day deserve special attention, because they were not always held in Russia. For the first 20 years after the victory, there were absolutely no centralized events, only then gradually parades in the squares of large cities became an indispensable attribute of the holiday. In Moscow, a demonstration of military equipment and personnel of the Russian army traditionally takes place on Red Square, and the day ends with fireworks. In 2015, an action called the Immortal Regiment was held in Russia, which was attended by thousands of people. Relatives of the veterans who gave their lives in the struggle for the Motherland carried their portraits, paying tribute to their memory.
Victory Day itself is a celebration of mixed feelings. There is joy for what has been done, for the reconquered Fatherland, for the long-suffering world, and pride for the bravery and courage of Soviet soldiers, and the bitterness of losses, because so many people died in battles, died in times of famine, so many fathers, husbands, grandfathers, brothers did not return home ... Relatives and friends keep the memory of their exploits passing this knowledge from generation to generation. It remains to be hoped that our descendants will not forget how devastating wars are and will carry reverence and respect for the feat of Soviet soldiers through the centuries.
