Rila Monastery and Veliko Tarnovo - ancient sights of Bulgaria

    Rylsky Monastery
At the foot of the Rila mountain range, at an altitude of 1,147 m above sea level, the most interesting Bulgarian structure, the Rila Monastery, is hidden among the lush forests. It is the largest and most famous monastery in Bulgaria. The magnificent sacred monument is included in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. For Bulgarians, it is a true national sanctity and the spiritual capital of the country, 120 km from the traditional capital. It is a symbol of resistance to Turkish enslavement, as well as a symbol of national revival. In the 10th century, the monastery was founded by Monk Ivan of Rila in a corner about 4 km from the current location. The current shape was given to the building only in the 19th century. Then, thanks to the generous donations of the Bulgarian society, an impressive monastery complex was built, which still impresses visitors from all over the world.
The heart of the Rila Monastery is decorated with fabulously colorful frescoes of the church dedicated to the Virgin. The temple is also decorated with a huge carved iconostasis. In addition, there are two museums on its territory. In one of them, you can admire the wooden Rafai cross, carved with a needle by a local monk. It features 104 scenes from the Bible, with 650 miniature figures the size of a grain of rice. In the courtyard of the monastery there is also the famous Chrelina tower with a height of 23 meters, consisting of 6 floors. The monastery is surrounded by huge walls 24 meters high.

    Veliko Tarnovo
In the northern foothills of Stara Planina, on picturesque hills intertwined with a winding Amber, one of the oldest cities in Bulgaria is located, and at the same time a symbol of Bulgarian independence and statehood. Veliko Tarnovo impresses with its centuries-old history and majestic buildings of the city, whose name combines the Slavic word "thorn" and the nickname "the great". The genesis of the city dates back to the Bronze Age. Over the years, the settlement was occupied by the Romans, Byzantines and Turks, and was solemnly liberated at the end of the 18th century.
Above the city, on Tsarevets Hill, the ruins of a medieval castle and church stand triumphantly. Another hill, the majestic Trapezica, is decorated with the remains of 17 churches and the ruins of chapels. On the way to the peaks, there are picturesque residential buildings from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. While visiting the city, visit Velikotyrnov University, one of the most important Bulgarian universities, or the Museum of the Bulgarian National Renaissance and the Constituent Assembly.
